Yes! Individual students are welcome to apply with their own art project.
May we apply as a group for a shared school project?
Yes, group projects are allowed. Each group should submit one application.
May I apply if I don’t attend AJ Whittenburg or Sterling School?
2025-2026 the scholarship is focused on AJ Whittenburg and Sterling School students.
2026-2027 other students may be considered based on available openings.
What types of art projects are eligible?
We welcome visual art projects of all kinds, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital art, and mixed media.
May I apply if I have interest but no prior experience?
Absolutely! We encourage creativity and passion, regardless of past experience.
May my parents, friends, or neighbors help me with my art project?
They may offer general encouragement, but your submitted artwork must be your own original creation.
Will I be paired with an Art Mentor like a local artist or art teacher?
Depending on availability, students may be paired with an artist mentor or art teacher for guidance.

Gallery Exhibit
Will there be a virtual or physical space to showcase my work?
Yes! We plan to feature student artwork on the Mattoon website, the I AM Art Legacy website, and potentially with local gallery partners.
Scholarship Badge for Schools
Will my school receive a small digital “Certified Scholarship Supporter” badge to display?
Yes, participating schools will receive a digital badge to celebrate their support of young artists.
Where do I deliver/send my finished art?
Delivery instructions will be provided after acceptance.
Typically, finished works are delivered to Mattoon Presbyterian Church or an approved partner site.
Awards Ceremony
When is the awards ceremony at Mattoon?
The Awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for April 2026.
A formal invitation will be sent to finalists.
Will my art be judged in a competition by Mattoon prior to awards day?
Yes, submitted works will be reviewed by a panel, including Mattoon representatives and local artists, before Awards ceremony.
