Its share of global reserve currencies fell from about 85% in 1977 to 46% by 1991, and sits near 40% today.
At the same time, gold now makes up a larger share of global reserves than the euro, the yen, and the British pound combined.
Central banks worldwide are accumulating gold at levels not seen in decades.
